The Three Keys to Success I've Learned from my Students

Over the years, I have seen that there are three keys to success for Spanish students. I want to share them with you here.

1. They Have a Clear Reason for Learning.

Ask yourself why you are learning Spanish and what will you get from the time you invest in learning.  Students who have clarity about why they are learning Spanish and have clear points of motivation are the ones who obtain the best results.  Keep reminding yourself what your goal is, this will help you  to stick with the program even if you start to feel overwhelmed or hit a challenging time in your life.

2. They are Consistent. In my many years of working as an instructor with Bilingual America I have worked with a variety of students. Students of different professions and many with very demanding schedules. Students who juggle between work, family and other daily life demands. Those who have achieved their goal of communicating well in Spanish are the ones who have stayed consistent in their learning process and have followed the program as it was specifically designed for them. They stay consistent with the tutoring sessions. They rarely cancel or reschedule a tutoring session. They avoid interruptions or taking long breaks between lessons or levels.

3. They Follow Instructions.  Each lesson in our program is designed in a series of steps.  Students must follow those 6 steps in the order presented. There is a reason for the amount of repetition requested in each step. It is important for the students to trust the process and to follow their tutor's instructions and recommendations. Students who do follow the directions given in the program develop all the skills necessary to learn the language well (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar rules, writing skills, fluidity, comprehension, etc.). For example, if a student skips Paso Seis (Step 6 -Paced Reading), he/she will not have the fluidity and pronunciation expected. Every step is important and has a very specific purpose.

Those are the three keys to success; have clear goals, stay consistent, and follow instructions. If you do those things you'll be speaking Spanish well by the end of the course. I've seen this over and over again now for over 8 years. The program works, the question is whether or not the student will work the program!
